Martina Steckholzer‘s (*1974, Italy) style of painting is documentary, deconstructive as well as poetic. In her large-format spatial images, she reduces exhibition architecture, stage settings and places of contemporary discourse. Steckholzer empties, abstracts and generates space using the most minimal tool available in painting: black pigment. What arises are aggregate states of space and perception that are always fragile. Empty as they are, the pictorial spaces become an open stage for and about painting. What is emerging is a materialistic, affirmative and projective type of institutional criticism.

Martina Steckholzer lavora in modo documentario e poetico. Si confronta con l'architettura espositiva, le scenografie e i luoghi del discorso, che vengono riportati su tele di grande formato nei loro tratti essenziali. Si rivelano così nuove pieghe, tagli spaziali e spazi vuoti. L'artista esplora le peculiarità di una fonte di immagini: Trovato - Il filmato diventa una sorta di poesia documentaristica che risuona con la creazione pittorica. Nei lavori su carta, solitamente di piccola dimensione, Steckholzer lavora con rapide pennellate per creare acquerelli monocromi, spesso dei ritratti, con sfumature critiche e politicamente sovversive. Martina Steckholzer (nata nel 1974 a Vipiteno, Alto Adige) è un'artista italiana che vive e lavora a Vienna.

Martina Steckholzer arbeitet empirisch und poetisch. In Ausstellungsarchitekturen, Bühnenbildern und Orten des Diskurses stößt sie auf ambivalente Räume. Diese werden im Atelier auf Leinwand gebracht und ihrem Wesen nach reduziert. Neue Faltungen, Raumschnitte und Leerstellen zeigen sich. Großformatige Gemäldegruppen entstehen. Oft drückt die Künstlerin die Eigenheiten einer Bildquelle auch in Text aus: Found – Footage wird in Resonanz mit dem bildlich Entstandenen zu einer Art dokumentarischen Dichtung. Steckholzer arbeitet auch auf Papier. In kleinen Formaten und raschem Farbauftrag. Monochrome Aquarelle entstehen, oft Portraits, mit kritischen und politisch-subversiven Untertönen.
