Selene Cardia (1995, Villasimius, Sardinia) is an artist whose practice is deeply rooted in the rhythms of everyday life. For her, painting is not merely the final image on the canvas but a process that begins with the very act of preparation—stretching canvases, assembling frames, and treating supports. These repetitive yet meticulous gestures establish a slow, deliberate rhythm, where care and attention shape the work from its inception. The raw edges of the canvas or paper, often left visible, are not just a technical choice but a statement that places the manual gesture at the core of her artistic discourse, emphasizing the materiality of the process.
Cardia presents her new series of works in this solo exhibition, following her receipt of a special mention from the jury of the GDG Prize. The exhibition, Dedicato a Miguilim (Dedicated to Miguilim), takes its title from the protagonist of João Guimarães Rosa's short story, published in 1984 and translated into Italian by Feltrinelli ten years later. Miguilim is a character suspended between joy and melancholy, constantly navigating the space between interior and exterior, between the desire to understand and the impossibility of fully grasping the reality that surrounds him.
This tension, which permeates Rosa’s literary narrative, resonates in Cardia’s painting, where presence and indefiniteness intertwine. Her works invite the viewer to experience the same delicate balance, offering a space where perception and materiality merge into a quiet yet profound dialogue.
